Have you seen all those bumper stickers? They just read “1-20-09”. It’s just a date on a sticker but it is a communication reminiscent of the date paintings of On Kawara.

On Kawara’s date paintings are of dates of events in the past. To my knowledge, he has never made any date paintings of future dates. His paintings correspond with a horrible tragedy. These bumper stickers have just as powerful a statement except this time, it is one of hope.1-20-09 is inauguration day. Bush will be gone.

Yeehaw! I’d like to hear about more of their bumper stickers. What others from that collection speak to you?

From that collection? Maybe the “W” ones. The Bush campaign was pretty successful branding “W” and it’s neat to see what “W” means to the opposition. The literalism is obvious throughout the rest. Some are clever. Some are petty. Some are crude. All of the bumper stickers come from a place of abject frustration with an administration that has done a great many terrible things. That’s a commonly identifiable human experience worth exploring.
